Why did you move to Halifax from Mexico?

It was a tough decision but, at the same time, my passion for making my goals and dreams come true and my courage to try new experiences allowed me to make this decision. I was always very excited to travel and learn about other cultures and experience different styles of life. After working several years in the packaged goods industry in Mexico City, I decided to take some time to travel and improve my English.  I visited Canada and fell in love with this beautiful country. So much so, that I decided to move here. I lived in Toronto and Ottawa fi rst before coming to Halifax. I love this city. It’s a wonderful and friendly community. Halifax is now my home sweet home!

What inspired you to work for the NSLC?

One of the main reasons that inspired me to work for the NSLC was the opportunity to expand my knowledge, skills and experience within the Alcohol Beverage Industry. I really enjoy having the opportunity to share my knowledge and serving people in a friendly and professional way. The NSLC is a great place to work. It is a workplace where I can have room to grow within the corporation and I have a sense of being valued as an employee. I love being part of a solid and stable organization with good core values that are pivotal in making our company a great place to work.

You’ve ascended from working at the Bayers Lake store to being a Retail Product Specialist at the flagship store. Can you describe that journey?

It has been an extraordinary last two years. I have been learning a lot from my colleagues and superiors. Since my first day at the Bayer’s Lake store, I received a very warm welcome from every member of my team and my superiors. The NSLC has also given me the opportunity to acquire the tools to be successful by supporting me with courses in order to enhance my knowledge in wine (my true passion), in beer and fi ne spirits.  Having the opportunity to now work at The Port as a Retail Product Specialist is an honour. I have met some wonderful customers. I am happy and ready to provide a superior customer service to them. Working at this store makes me feel very proud of myself and very excited for the new challenges and opportunities that are coming in the future.I encourage you to visit us anytime; we will find the best selection to suit your palate.

What courses have you taken?

I have completed my Sommelier training and have been a member of the Association of Mexican Sommeliers. I also completed WSET (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) Certifi ed Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits, program.  I have found in wine a way to discover and explore other regions of the world. My passion to learn about other traditions, cultures, and their food inspired me to constantly learn more about this fascinating world of wine. For me, wine is like music. It is universal and does not matter who you are, or where you come from, in order to enjoy a glass surrounded by good company.

When you’re not enjoying wine, is there anything else you like to drink?

In the spring and summer time, I like making cocktails. My favourite one is called the Paloma (Spanish for dove). This cocktail is as good as a Margarita, but it is prepared by mixing Tequila with a grapefruit-flavoured soda. You can make it as Ana suggests (page 13). Alternatively, mix 1 1/2 fl uid ounces Tequila with fresh 4 fl uid ounces red or white grapefruit juice and 1/3 fl uid ounce freshly squeezed lime juice.
